Dr. Madeline Goddard is a senior project coordinator with the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) and a recent graduate of Charles Darwin University’s Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods and the Australian National University.
In this seminar, Madeline will discuss how long-term monitoring of mangrove surface elevation provides critical insight into the long-term persistence of mangroves and the ecosystem services they provide under rising sea levels.
Madeline has worked in Darwin Harbour’s mangroves for over 10 years, measuring surface-elevation dynamics using an extensive network of Surface Elevation Tables (SETs) and researching the implications of sea-level rise for these macrotidal mangroves and the ecosystem services they provide.
Darwin Harbour’s mangroves now form part of TERN’s national OzSET network, illustrating how coordinated, long-term observations across Australia can contribute to understanding the future of mangroves under accelerating sea-level rise.
During her PhD, Madeline’s research focused on mangrove responses to climatic drivers. In Madeline’s current work with TERN, she is developing a nationally coordinated coastal wetland monitoring program. Her research and field experience spans northern Australia and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
