Prof Sunil Kadri is Professor of Tropical Aquaculture at the Research Institute for Northern Agriculture (RINA) at Charles Darwin University (CDU).
Fish farms have historically been a black box in terms of understanding the behavioural needs and preferences of the fish within them, as the only chance to assess what they are up to is when they break the surface. Sunil has been monitoring fish behaviour below the surface of farms for 35 years, delivering operational improvements, a better understanding of fish welfare needs, and even answering fundamental questions related to the ecology of farmed species in the wild.
Be prepared for some fishy tales as Sunil takes you through that journey, which continues today, in the seminar ‘From CCTV to AI: A journey of discovery, below the surface, using cutting-edge tech’.
Sunil has always straddled industry and academia, working on fish behaviour and welfare in aquaculture within a series of tech companies in synergy with following his research interest in the area through academic positions in Scotland, Chile and now Australia. He is also involved in Indigenous aquaculture in New Zealand.
