Vincent Lingiari Memorial Gathering to honour legacy through campfire stories and song

The Vincent Lingiari Memorial Lecture will feel a little different this year, with the Vincent Lingiari Memorial Gathering – campfire yarning with Charlie King.

In place of a formal lecture, this year’s event will feature an intimate conversation with respected Gurindji man, broadcaster and anti-family violence advocate Charlie King OAM AM, with Mr King sharing deeply personal reflections on reconnecting with his mother’s Country and the experience of walking in two worlds.

The evening will also be accompanied by music from ARIA Award-winning singer-songwriter Sara Storer and a special performance by Mr King’s niece, Sky Nelson.

Held annually by Charles Darwin University (CDU), the event honours the 1966 Wave Hill Walk-Off, led by Vincent Lingiari and the Gurindji people, a pivotal moment in the struggle for Aboriginal land rights.

“Vincent Lingiari’s spirit lives on in the fight for truth, justice, and the enduring strength of our communities,” Mr King said.

“This gathering is a time to reflect, to share stories, and to honour the courage of those who walked before us.

“My mother was taken from Limbunya Station and raised in the Khalin Compound. Reconnecting with her Country has been an emotional journey - one that speaks to the pain, strength, and survival of the Stolen Generations. I carry that legacy with me every day.”

Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor First Nations Leadership Professor Ruth Wallace said CDU was proud to continue its long-standing tradition of honouring Vincent Lingiari’s legacy.

“This gathering is about truth-telling and connection,” Professor Wallace said.

“It brings community together to acknowledge the past and walk together towards a more just future.”

Gurindji Aboriginal Corporation CEO Martin Limb welcomed the evolution of the event.

“Vincent’s legacy isn’t just history - it’s living and breathing,” Mr Limb said. 

“This gathering reflects our way of sharing knowledge and culture. Around a fire, we speak from the heart.”

 “It’s important our young people see these stories carried forward. Charlie’s voice helps keep that spirit alive.”

The Vincent Lingiari Memorial Gathering – campfire yarning with Charlie King will be held Wednesday 6 August from 5.30pm–7.30pm at Orange 7 Amphitheatre, CDU Casuarina Campus.
