CDU inspiring NT school students towards STEM study and career pathways
About 100 Northern Territory year nine students are exploring careers, study and employment options in STEM and science related fields in the Territory as a part of Charles Darwin University’s (CDU) Santos Science Experience this week.
Students from 14 schools across the Territory including Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine and Wurrumiyanga are taking part in the annual three-day science, engineering, and technology event from June 7-9 at CDU’s Casuarina Campus.
The students are participating in a range of STEM-related activities and workshops including the NT medical program, exercise and sport science, environmental science, engineering, aquaculture, health science, paramedicine and AusEarthed.
Students will also participate in an oil and gas demonstration, a trades tour, a 3D fire model workshop and a lecture detailing the study pathways for careers in this field.
CDU’s Future Student Engagement Officer and Santos Science Experience co-ordinator Jaime McCartney said this program was an important opportunity for students to get a glimpse into tertiary education and potential careers in STEM.
“Throughout the three days students have an opportunity to undertake a variety of workshops and activities and get a big picture of what to expect as they enter their senior schooling,” Ms McCartney said.
“It also offers students a taste of what it might be like to study a STEM course at CDU and what career opportunities might be available to them down the track.”
“CDU’s Santos Science Experience always receives positive feedback, and we encourage more students to attend the program in the future to explore the many STEM pathways available.”
CDU has been hosting the Santos Science Experience for Northern Territory students annually since 2006 and are the only hosts of the event in Australia who don’t pass on the $190 registration fee to students.
CDU gains sponsorship from local governments and businesses to offer all students an equal opportunity.
